Bad breath or halitosis is a common condition mostly caused by bacteria that live in the mouth and on the tongue.
Some people will be very aware it is present as it may cause embarrassment and some may be unaware of the problem.
• What causes it?
There are many causes of breath but one of the most common causes is undiagnosed gum disease.
As bacteria accumulate in the mouth an overgrowth occurs and bad bacteria known as anaerobic bacteria begin to take hold.
Because these bacteria hate oxygen they live under the gums, between the teeth, in decaying teeth, leaking fillings and crowns and many on the surface of the tongue.
These bacteria thrive in these environments and breakdown protein from food and human cells to release a gaseous by-product known as volatile sulphur compounds (VSC's) which are also what's responsible for giving garlic and onion their unforgettable odor.
• Do I have it?
Ask yourself if your breath interferes with your social and everyday life or if you have experienced the following:
– you frequently have a bad taste in your mouth
– somebody else has commented on your breath (i.e. Wife/Friend/Work colleague)
